This amazing story on the Discovery Channel web site discusses the use of artificial bone implants made of wood, rather than some form of metal or ceramic. Though not approved for use in humans yet, Italian scientists are touting the advantages of wood-based implants over non-organic materials because wood more closely resembles the characteristics of bone. This is a fascinating concept. Of course, the giggly puckish demon in me thinks this is so very steampunk. I picture myself with a wooden peg leg and a bottle of rum flying a steam-powered airship through Victorian England. I should probably see a doctor about that.
